Aeration For a Healthy Pond

Pond AerationThere are several considerations to maintaining a healthy pond. The most important of these is having a proper pond aerator to circulate and add necessary oxygen to the pond.

Without proper aeration, ponds begin a negative, counter-productive cycle. The pond will become eutrophic and begin to produce algae, which may also cause foul odors. Without oxygen, accumulation of fish waste, dead vegetation and other organic material becomes a black muck resting on the bottom of the pond which then releases nutrients that feed pond algae and pond vegetation.

Aerating your pond will also prevent stratification from occurring during the winter months. Stratification is when a layering of cooler, heavier layer stays on the bottom, while a warmer, lighter layer sits on the top. In cooler months, the air will cool the warmer top layer and causes these layers to mix. The bottom layer is dead and toxic, and when it mixes with the healthier top layer causes a "turnover", which adds stress to the fish, increases the mortality and causing a "fish kill".

Windmill Aeration is an economic, safe, low maintenance and attractive option to reduce sediment and help decompose all organic materials in your pond. Also, it will eliminate thermal stratification, prevent fish kills, creating a stronger and more productive fish population, and overall, a healthier ecosystem.
